Second Annual Youth Tomato Contest

We have some Juicy News: Our Second Annual Youth Tomato Contest is Monday, August 7th!

Mass Farmers Market (MFM) announces the return of our highly anticipated Second Annual Youth Tomato Contest on Monday, August 7th, from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM at Central Square Farmers Market. To celebrate National Farmers Market Week (August 6-12), join us for a tomato-tasting, slicing, and admiring extravaganza!

The event will be located at the Central Square Farmers Market at Norfolk Street between Mass Ave. and Bishop Allen Drive in Cambridge. We're inviting local youth non-profits, including The Food Project, Waltham Fields, gardeners from City Sprouts Cambridge. Thank you to Kimball Farms for gifting tomato seedlings to participants in June.

All kids regardless of affiliation with a nonprofit aged 2-18 are invited to participate and present their tomatoes for judging.

Tomato judging will begin at 3:45 pm.

There will be an all-star lineup of tomato judges. We’ll have Chef Joe Gatto of Cooking from Scratch and NPR's weekly chef as the MC for the event. We're also honored to have the Mass Department of Agriculture (MDAR) Deputy Commissioner, Winton Pitcoff and Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, Rebecca Tepper.  We’ll also have taste maker extraordinaire Michael Monestine, Professional Tomato Judge Brian Wright (a second-year veteran), Vegan Soul Food Chef Whitney "Tomato" Monroe, and the incredible Chef and Tomato Whisperer, Elijah Rolle. These tomato aficionados will crown winners in the following categories: Best Cherry Tomato, Best Heirloom Tomato, Best Slicer Tomato, and Heaviest Tomato.

But that's not all! Prepare for a tomato-filled adventure with games and prizes. Mark your calendars for this fantastic event for a tomato-filled celebration of flavor and community.
