First-Ever Urban Barn Dance and
Harvest Supper Friday, October 24th from 7 to
10pm
The George Dilboy VFW Hall in Somerville’s Davis Square was
the setting for a lively and delicious celebration of this
year’s
growing season. Guests toasted the hard work of their favorite
farmers with a hearty locally grown supper, and then
continued the celebration with live music and contra
dancing.
Dinner featured several different preparations of locally
raised pork donated by farmers Kate Stillman and Aidan Davin
of
Stillman's at the Turkey Farm. Chef Bob Sargent of flora restaurant was
at the helm in the kitchen, and besides creating
mouth-watering pork dishes, he provided several hearty sides
to accompany them. Dessert was donated by Hamilton Orchards
and
Whole Foods Market. A number of local farmers also donated ingredients for the meal: many thanks to Silvermine Farm and Enterprise Farm for their generosity! Thanks also to Gilson's Herb Lyceum, Nicewicz Family Farm, Hanson's Farm, and Whole Foods for their donations of decorative mums, cornstalks, and Indian corn.
The evening's menu was as follows:
- Delicious homemade rolls accompanied by Hannahbell cheese from Shy Brothers Farm
-
- Arugula salad with beets, red onions and walnuts
-
- Toasted corn, tomato, and green bean salad
-
- Quinoa with brussels sprouts, pecans, and caramelized
onions
-
- Hubbard and butternut squash puree
-
- Roasted potatoes with garlic and rosemary
-
- Clams, mussels and kale with garlic and white wine
-
- Slow-cooked savoy cabbage with apples, pork belly and
garlic sausage
-
- Ale-braised pork shoulder with white beans and pickled
jalapenos
-
- Roasted pork loin with cranberry-maple glaze
-
- Apple crisp from the Whole Foods Bake Shop
-
- Homemade cider donuts from Hamilton Orchards
After dinner we pushed back the tables and brought
country-style dancing to the city! Contra caller David Titus
worked seamlessly with musicians Sean Smith, Cammy Kaynor, Pan
Chan, Peter Buchack, Daniel Salomon, and Eric Eid-Reiner (aka
"John Deere and the Herd") to lead guests in over an hour of
energetic contra and square dancing.
When catching a breath from dancing, attendees bid on a silent
auction with prizes including:
